Mumbai's very own sex gallery, Posted On - 2/25/2007 3:14:07 PM
Interesting how Antarang, the only Sex Gallery in Mumbai that answers every query about the stages of sexual maturation, actual union and also the process of pregnancy and birth thereafter, has remained out of public sight, in spite of being in existence since the past five years now. Walk up the staircase, on to the first floor of the STD (sexually transmitted diseases) clinic, at Bela Sis Road outside Kamathipura and we have Antarang.

A door that leads you inside ‘a world of sexuality’, as Bhanudas, the guide of Antarang i.e. inside the body, calls it. Starting with a page from the Kamasutra written on the wall at the entrance of the gallery to walking through a close cut frame of a man and a woman, you realise what the comment made by Bhanudas actually meant.

This educational tour that starts with a glimpse of the shivaling symbolises the holy union of Lord Shiva with Parvati. This Indian mythology of sexual union being holy is drilled into the head of the visitor. The tour then carries on with explanations about the male and female anatomy and various stages of growth and maturation. Keeping aside an hour or two to complete the tour is definitely a must to understand the ideation behind each of the art pieces kept there.

Dr Nirupa Borjea, project director of Antarang, maintains this is an art gallery for everyone interested in the awareness of the subject of sexual development, irrespective of the fact that it is placed outside Kamathipura, a red light area. “We are open to visits from anyone who wants information about how sexual growth occurs and also about the ill-effects of unprotected sex. The advertising for this gallery is done through word of mouth, NGO’s and also the NSS and NSC groups of various colleges,” asserts Dr Borjea.“Having our Art Gallery placed outside Kamathipura wasn’t planned, it just so happened that this Bela Sis Road was the only land available to us and we utilised it,” she adds.

Contrary to this Bhanudas says, “The plot was planned keeping in mind that the area adjoining was that of a red-light area. Most of our visitors are from Kamathipura too, who come in with a few queries regarding pregnancy and HIV AIDS. We also provide some amount of counselling to these women.” The few visitors of this art gallery are school children starting from standard VII and VIII, junior college students of various colleges in the city. Medical college students from the city and also visiting students are entertained for educational purposes.

Coming to the accessibility issue Dr Borjea confides, “A proposal has also been put forward to start a site in the west of the city, along similar lines for greater accessibility.” So, hopefully, Mumbai will soon see a day when parents will openly guide their children about the ill-effects of unprotected sex and not shy away from the mistakes caused by youth due to tongue-tied nature of the knower.
